For the past thirty-three years, Angela Gillespie has sent to friends and family around the world an end-of-the-year letter titled “Hello from the Gillespies.” It’s always been cheery and full of good news. This year, Angela surprises herself—she tells the truth….
The Gillespies are far from the perfect family that Angela has made them out to be. Her husband is coping badly with retirement. Her thirty-two-year-old twins are having career meltdowns. Her third daughter, badly in debt, can’t stop crying. And her ten-year-old son spends more time talking to his imaginary friend than to real ones.
Without Angela, the family would fall apart. But when Angela is taken away from them in a most unexpected manner, the Gillespies pull together—and pull themselves together—in wonderfully surprising ways…
I really enjoyed this book. It starts off with Angela writing or trying to write her families annual Christmas letter and I wasn’t in the Christmas spirit at first so I started off kind of iffy about this book. For me, personally, it takes me a little longer then most people to get in to the holiday spirit. However, reading this book definitely put me in the spirit. It’s only November and I am ready for Christmas. In fact most of my Christmas shopping is already done. This book definitely brought that about. This book reminded me of the importance of communication within a relationship and family. Without communicating clearly with our significant other and children even, we are left to draw conclusions based on actions and we start assuming things that aren’t true but we don’t know otherwise because communication isn’t there like it should be. Another thing this book reminded me is the importance of HOPE. We live off of hope. Without it all is lost. We see no point in going on like we have done for so long already. Hope is what constantly makes up look forward to a better tomorrow. Hope makes the world seem a little less dark and eerie and a little more colorful and full of wonder and peace.
The difference I noticed when I was reading this book versus reading some of the other books I’ve read is that I never stopped to wonder where the story was going or what was going to happen. Don’t get me wrong there were questions at times. Like was Nick really cheating or was she reading too much into the situation because face it we females tend to do that all too often. But there wasn’t a hole lot of questions. The story just flowed and you just wanted to keep reading. It was over too soon for me. I wanted to see what would come next. Although at the same time that was the perfect ending. They had their mishaps and then another bigger mishap and then they got through it like families all around the world get through things. Granted some won’t always end up all together in the end but this particular family did.
I am actually inspired by this book. I have a husband and three children. Two girls that I actually had and a step son who is still just my son. We communicate very well I think but I still felt inspired. Reading this book let me know that even when we do hit a rough patch in our journey together that it is ok to talk about it. I don’t have to shoulder the hard stuff alone because in the end that causes more pain then if I were to share it. I have learned lessons from this book that one day (because every relationship has their moments) I’ll be able to put those lessons I learned into practice. And I believe in doing so my family will come out stronger in the end. Also in doing so I am teaching my children the importance of communication.
I really enjoyed this book. It was definitely what I needed to read when I read it. I love reading especially when I learn lessons to life. I recommend this book to everyone! Please read it. Experience this book and for everything it has done. I know it has touched my life in a positive way. I hope if any of you do read it because I would love if you did that it touches your life too!
