Summary: Faith Watters has a picture-perfect life. She’s captain of the dance team, popular, happy. She even spent her junior year traveling the world before returning to Oviedo High School for senior year. But She’s living a lie Diego Alvarez hates his new life in the States, but staying in Cuba is not an option. Covered in tattoos and scars, Diego doesn’t stand a chance of fitting in, and doesn’t want to. His only concern is his secret past–a past, which if it were to surface, would cost him his life. Everyone knows that Faith and Diego don’t belong together. But fate has its own plan. All they want is to be free. What they get is something different entirely.
My Thoughts: I always seem to love stories or movies that are set in high school and have two characters in two social groups that don’t “belong” together try and fight to be together and or stay together. There are so many struggles each person faces due to their own ethnicity, sexuality, religion, etc. But when two people from two completely different ethnicity and religion try to be together it opens up another set of problems. People judge you and doubt you and maybe even fear you because you are challenging them to open up their minds and accept something that they have been told or taught was wrong for who knows how long. There are so many different struggles that one person could face let alone two completely different people that stories never get old. I love how Faith has her own demons she struggles with that no one knows but her dad until she meets Diego and decides to tell him as well. She puts on this mask at church and high school and never takes it off. No one knows the real her. I understood this character because I am so much like her. I use to wear masks. Depending on who I was around or where I was depended on who I was at that time. Until one day the masks quit working for me. I got so miserable that I had to let them go. Change happens when the pain of staying the same becomes to great! However she didn’t want to disappoint her dad and others so she continued wearing her masks. Until Diego. Oddly enough I can relate to Diegos character as well. I know what its like to be somewhere you don’t want to be but to go back wasn’t an option. Stuck between a rock and a hard spot so all you can do is try to make the best of it. I love how in this book Diego pushes Faith. Not in a bad way but in a good way. He challenges her to be herself. Makes her braver. Makes her stronger. Makes her become her without feeling bad about it or worrying what others think. Others will get glad in the same pants they got mad in. I love their love story and their struggles because of all their differences. I was surprised by the ending for sure though.
Final thoughts: If you are looking for a book that has an wonderful, beautiful, epic love story with twists you can’t even begin to imagine! Including the ending that was just so amazing then you definitely need to read this book. It is absolutely wonderfully written and full of surprises. I loved it and I am looking forward to reading the second book After Us coming out in January! Amber Hart you wrote an amazing book I look forward to After Us and any other books you have in the works!!
