Summary:

The Jewel means wealth, the Jewel means beauty–but for Violet, the Jewel means servitude.                                                   Bought at the surrogacy auction by the Duchess of the Lake, Violet (now known only as #197) is quickly thrown into the royal way of life. But behind its opulent and glittering facade, the Jewel hides its brutal reality, which is filled with violence, manipulation, and death. Violet must accept that she will bear a child for the Duchess, as well as the ugly truth of the city…. all while trying to stay alive. Before she can accept her fate, though, Violet meets a handsome boy who is also under the Duchess’s control, and a forbidden love erupts. Toeing the line between calculating and rebellious, Violet must decide what, and whom, she is willing to risk for her own freedom.

My Thoughts:

Genuinely I like books that are in a different world. By that I mean books that aren’t taking place in just a normal town in the USA. They always seem to be more intriguing, capturing the audience a little faster then the other books (for me at least). This place and setting was good and very interesting. I loved how Amy wrote in detail. I don’t think I have read anything as detailed as this book. I loved the color schemes she described and I pictured the things that were described so beautiful! However there is a down fall to that. There is such a thing to me as being too detailed. Although my mind displayed such beautiful pictures and it was lovely I felt that there was almost too much detail and not enough story. I feel like most the book was detailing descriptions of the places and gowns and palaces. Without all the detail the story would have been a lot shorter, or at least that’s how I feel about it. Don’t get me wrong the story was good. I enjoyed it.

Final Thoughts:

I thought for me that the best part of the book (aside from all the detailing that gave me wonderful pictures in my head) was the last couple chapters where the story finally felt like it was going somewhere only to end too soon. I liked the excitement of her self sacrificing for her friend and the excitement of getting caught breaking some of the rules. However then it just ended. I hope there is a second book so that I can continue reading because it was getting exciting.!
